I am so excited to announce that we are finally here (almost) and Hotel Burlesque opens THIS WEEK! (Friday night, March 4th to be exact!) We play for five weekends through Saturday night April 2nd! You know we are excited to finally share this project with you… We started the process with performer applications in late Spring of 2015 and have been working individually with the cast on their solo numbers since September of 2015. This has been an exciting and dynamic project that has allowed each person the freedom to create and develop their own character, but also has allowed us to collaborate on a full script with a (perhaps dysfunctional, but) complete plot line. While every year we have created a theatrical/burlesque show with a collaborative approach, this year has allowed the performers the most freedom in the creation, development, and language of their specific characters.
Each performer in the group brings their own skills, talent, and background to the show. In creating this work we have had to trust in ourselves, in our director, and in our fellow performers. While performing and developing a show in this way can be ultra empowering, it can also be really damned scary! We have made an effort to bring a positive attitude to this show, this creation, and our individual and group performances within it. Throughout the uncertainty of this process, our confidence (and sometimes the maniacal, crazed laughter) has to pull us through to the next step in the process (and occasionally backwards and sideways, too).
Thank goodness I adore each and every member of the cast and the team as we pursue the creation of art! Everyone imbued this show with their creative and positive energy… from Director Amanda Ortmayer, dramaturg Christian Cagigal, set and technical assistance Dylan West, and performers IfNWhendy, Bunny von Tail, Devyl Mae Kare, Tornado Supertrouble, Dee O’s’Mios, and Lady Malavendra… If we didn’t use a team approach and ensure the care and understanding of the other team members through-out the process we would likely either implode or just self destruct.
Hotel Burlesque is a special place, and we hope you will come and stay – er, play – with us for a night involving a little fun, fear, possibly some fury, and, of course, fabulousness! We laugh a little, we cry a little – we spare no emotion in this romp through one 24-hour time span.
We have set building, tech rehearsal, and many late nights ahead of us before we open. Please come cheer us on and join us in this beautiful, mad stage creation!
